So many steps go into standing on stage with a new costume. As much I would love to drive to the store, and then wear that costume in the next show (Boy, would that be convenient!), it just isn't that easy. There are several steps that need to happen before I can don a new fabulous, shiny costume on stage.
First, I start by scouring the web looking at highend dress stores for something that screams Olivia Newton-John. Sometimes these pieces look very similar to my inspiration pieces and sometimes they are more of a nod to the original piece. I have a fabulous costumer, and I could show her a photo and have her make exact replicas; however, I find that sometimes a tribute performer can look more like a caricature than an authentic representation of the person they are paying tribute to. It's so hard to immulate a person in history without sometimes risking looking cheesy or inauthentic. So, to avoid this pitfall, I choose to find pieces that are modern nods to the original masterpieces. This allows me to shop for current pieces, but with the safety net of knowing that my costumer, Amanda, can turn it into whatever I'm envisioning.
Next I bring my costume to Amanda, (Designs by Amanda Fay), and we come up with a plan for not only what the costume will look like when it is completed, but also how to make the costume quick-change ready, so that I am able to quickly change into it by myself in less than one minute.
After an initial fitting, Amanda gets to work, and usually a few weeks later, I have the finished piece in my hands. After a few quick-change test runs, the new costume is ready for the stage.
I've included my two newest costumes below for The Olivia Show and Olivia's outfits that inspired me. I just love her color and style choices throughout the years, but I definitely gravitate towards the pinks and purples just as she did.
And a huge thank you to Designs by Amanda Fay for always making me look fabulous on stage!
